Biography

Born in West Covina, CA and raised in rural Texas, Matthew Warren Patterson joined the Department of Art & Art History in 2011 as an Assistant Professor in Art for the glass arts.  His research focuses on exploring identity with an emphasis on the natural world through sculptural applications in glass, wood, metal, and mixed media.  He has taught a variety of glass blowing classes with an emphasis on traditional Venetian techniques and contemporary methods of sculpting glass.  His current research is inspired by the natural wonders of the gulf coast region, exploring color and pattern through vessels and sculptural objects.


Publications

Matthew Patterson鈥檚 work has been exhibited nationally in galleries, museums and internationally in private collections. His work has been exhibited in over 40 juried and group shows including 3 solo exhibitions. Recent juried exhibitions include Art + Science, at the Whitewater Art Gallery in Richmond, IN; Functional Art, at the Larson Gallery in Yakima, WA; Black Creek Arts Exhibition, Hartsville, SC; the Fine Arts Exhibition of the Decatur Arts Festival, Decatur, GA; From the Earth 鈥 Glass, Clay and Paper at the Tubac Center for the Arts, Tubac, AZ; and the LaGrange National XXVIII at the LaGrange Art Museum, LaGrange, GA. He recently received the 鈥淕reg Olsen Memorial Award鈥 for work at the Larson Gallery at Yakima, WA and the "Award for Excellence" for his work at the Tubac Center for the Arts, Tubac, AZ.
