Neuromuscular Physiology, Plasticity, and Performance Laboratory

The Neuromuscular Physiology, Plasticity, and Performance (NP3) Laboratory in the Exercise & Nutrition Research Group (ENRG èßäÉçÇøAPP) at the University of South Alabama conducts research to further understand the function of the human neuromuscular system and its response to various interventions. Broadly, our research focuses on the:

  • Function & structure of the human neuromuscular system (Physiology)
  • Adaptability of the human neuromuscular system (Plasticity)
  • Exercise capacity of the human neuromuscular system (Performance) 

Our state-of-the-art laboratory primarily utilizes non-invasive measures to further understand the human neuromuscular system under various physiological conditions. These assessments include: 

  • Motor Unit Decomposition & Surface Electromyography (sEMG)
  • Peripheral Nerve Stimulation 
  • Dynamometry 
  • Force Plate & Load Cells 
  • Maximal Strength Testing & Force-Velocity Profiling 
  • Ultrasonography 

Our projects often include additional biochemical, vascular, and body composition assessments in collaboration with other laboratories within the Exercise & Nutrition Research Group and the èßäÉçÇøAPP Whiddon College of Medicine.
