Academic Probation, Suspension, and Dismissal Policy in the College of Engineering

Students near Shelby Hall

College of Engineering Policy

Under the , students with a cumulative grade point average below 2.0 are deemed as having academic difficulties and, as a result, are placed on Academic Probation. A 鈥淧robation Hold鈥 is automatically placed on these students, which prevents the student from making any changes to their schedule and registering for classes until the Hold is lifted.

Students in the College of Engineering placed on Academic Probation must meet with either Mr. Derik Wolfe, Director of Academic Advising (email wolfe@southalabama.edu) or Dr. Eric Steward, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs (email esteward@southalabama.edu), before the regular two-week Academic Advising period defined by their Department. These students must then subsequently also meet with their assigned Academic Advisor during the regular two-week advising period for the Advising Hold to be lifted. This policy applies to all College of Engineering undergraduate students who have matriculated into the College of Engineering and enrolled in or completed MA 126 Calculus II. All other College of Engineering students will meet with their Academic Advisor in AATS (Academic Advising & Transfer Services) for Probation Advising.

Purpose of Probation Advising

The Academic Probation Advising provides additional time for a discussion with either Mr. Wolfe and Dr. Steward to develop an Individualized Academic Success Plan. The regular two-week Academic Advising period is primarily intended for faculty and Academic Advisors to meet with all their advisees to review and discuss schedule plans for the upcoming semester. These plans are to include course selections and potential employment and career opportunities.

If a student on Academic Probation does not meet for Probation Advising prior to regular Academic Advising, the Probation Hold will remain in place until the student has met with either Mr. Wolfe or Dr. Steward resulting in the student being prevented from making changes to their current schedule and registering for classes. In this College, only Mr. Wolfe or Dr. Steward have the authority to remove the Probation Hold.
